Why study DNA adduct formation in relation to the genotoxic risks ?
The physical damage to the DNA, the biomolecule that is carrying the genetic information, can potentially initiate the multistep process of the chemical carcinogenesis (1). Some damage is associated to chemicals. Biological effects potentially affect the cellular individual, populational levels (3).
In another way, these primary DNA alterations may be biomarkers of exposure (or risk) associated to genotoxic agents (genotoxicants) from the environment and having reached their target (the DNA) usually after metabolic bioactivation (2)
